About Filicudi Island
Geology
Geologically speaking Filicudi is one of the oldest islands, made of volcanic materials, which were erupted between 200,000 and 50,000 years ago.
Origin of the name
The origin of the name is still uncertain. For some, the word Filicudi, from he Greek Phoenicusa, means “full of ferns“; for others, among them Strabone and Aristotle, “full of palm trees”.
Geomorfoly
Filicudi has an extension of nine square kilometres, a maximum height of 774 metres (Mount Fossa Felci) and a typical elliptic shape, only interrupted by the promontory towards the East of the highland of Capo Graziano, almost an appendix.
The People
Filicudi offers an unspoilt landscape, precisely because it remained out of the scope of mass tourism.
The inhabitants, about 250, are mainly concentrated in the southern part of the island. Here rise the inhabited centres of Filicudi port, Rocca di Ciauli, Pecorini, and Valdichiesa.
Means of trasport
The most practical means of transport is the scooter, which is easily rentable upon prior booking, as well as small cars.
From the island it is easy to go day-tripping to Vulcano, Salina, Lipari and Alicudi, whereas for Stromboli and Panarea at least a couple of days are needed.
