The island of Filicudi is one of the oldest islands of the archipelago and it is made up of volcanic materials emitted between 200,000 and 50,000 years ago. The etymology of the name is still uncertain. Some believe that the term “Filicudi” stems from the Greek “Phoenicusa”, meaning ``rich in ferns``. Others, including Strabo and Aristotle, claim that the name actually translates into ``rich in palm trees``.

THE INHABITANTS

The inhabitants, around 250 people, are concentrated in the southern part of the island. Here we find the inhabited areas of Filicudi Porto, Rocca di Ciauli, Pecorini, and Valle di Chiesa.
